So what's going on?
As far as I can see, HaberTürk published the first news on this subject. The news, signed by Esra Nehir, was published at 14.13 on March 26. There are many important details in the news, one of which is that President Tayyip Erdoğan will go to Baghdad on April 22.
The importance of the news is this: Joe Biden was elected president of the USA in 2020 and took office in January 2021. In the past 3 years, Tayyip Erdoğan was not invited to the White House even once. Tayyip Erdoğan met frequently with the two presidents before Biden, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. But he rarely met with Biden. Their last face-to-face meeting was at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July last year.
We would learn that Erdogan had spoken to Obama or Trump on the phone in the past after the meeting took place; However, even the phone call with Biden was announced in advance and expectations were created.
That's why Esra Nehir's news in HaberTürk was important; For the first time during his presidency, Biden was inviting Tayyip Erdoğan for an official visit and would host him at the White House. The news even gave a date for the meeting: May 9.
About 15 minutes after HaberTürk, NTV news television broadcasted a similar news. That news also said that Biden invited Erdoğan and that the two leaders would meet on May 9.
On the same day, March 26, at 16.54, Cumhuriyet newspaper also published the news. This news was almost identical to NTV's news.
There were 5 days left for local elections in Turkey and the news was important. There was a surprising situation for those who knew how such trips were carried out: The date of the visit was also clear; So this issue must have been discussed between the USA and Türkiye for a few weeks. Because it was not that easy to find the right day for both leaders.
These news of the Turkish media were confirmed and published by the Reuters news agency on March 29. In Reuters' three-signed news from Ankara and Washington, it was stated that "Biden will host Erdoğan."
Then weeks passed, and on Saturday, April 20, news to the contrary appeared on OdaTV. Erdogan gave up going to Washington and meeting with Biden. The reason was the decision of the American Senate to provide $26 billion in aid to Israel.
But Abdülkadir Selvi, the writer of Hürriyet newspaper, who received good news from the ruling circles, denied this news on April 24. Selvi wrote in her column, "The trip is not cancelled." In Abdülkadir Selvi's article yesterday, it is stated that preparations for the trip are continuing.
But as of yesterday, there is a new situation. The White House also spoke on this issue. John Kirby, spokesman for the President's national security advisor, responded to a question by saying, “There is nothing scheduled regarding President Erdogan's visit. "Therefore, I have no comment on this issue," he said.
How? Were the news published since March 26 a lie? Did Ankara become a bride and groom on its own? Did the White House and US State Department sources who spoke to Reuters lie?
Let's start again:
This trip would be made upon the invitation of the American President and would have an 'official' nature.
Now, when the party that is said to have made the invitation says the sentence "We do not have such an invitation" out loud in public, a truly strange situation emerges.
There's something even weirder: Journalist Cansu Çamlıbel, who used to be a diplomatic correspondent in Ankara and Hürriyet's representative in Washington, says in her article published in T24 that she spoke to a diplomatic source in Ankara and confirmed that the trip will be held. Cansu Çamlıbel, who is not one of the journalists who would easily sidestep, wrote this article despite John Kirby's statement, and the article already says 'He lied' about Kirby.
If the American side first invited President Erdoğan and then gave up the invitation, this is a grave situation. Because this invitation itself had already come with great difficulties, the recent approval of Sweden's NATO membership opened this door. Now, it is alleged that President Erdoğan's meeting with Hamas leader Ismail Haniye caused the cancellation of the invitation.
But of course, we don't know whether the invitation was actually cancelled. At least Ankara doesn't know.
In fact, Tayyip Erdoğan's first plan was to attend the NATO summit to be held in Washington in July and to have a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden during this summit.
As I said, we do not know whether the meeting in May was canceled (despite the White House statement). If this appointment is cancelled, will President Erdoğan still go to the NATO summit on July 9-11?
One cannot help but remember Orhan Veli's poem: 'Canan who does not come during the day/He never comes after midnight.' (Another version of the same poem is: 'Canan who never comes to Degustation/He never comes to the fish market.')
